I know the obvious answer is: it depends what type of music you listen to. I was wondering if anyone had any more in depth reasons and why music makes you happy or sad?

Usually I recollect the old memories associated with the song which makes me have mixed feelings.

Music fills the void of boredom! Really, music just isn't that important to me. There were times I could sit in my room and just veg out listening all day. But, then I noticed that the world was passing me by and there was more than cramming my head with poetic tunes. Once I got my head on straight I found a way for the music and I to coexist and actually enhance my life by using it at the appropriate times. I listen to it about 2-3 hours a day but only at the times that I am focused on something that doesn't require that much mental prowess. "Driving" Now music has an appeal that has morphed from a brain dead trance to a tool to enhance my work day. It's amazing what I was missing in those zombie days!

Sometimes it is when you listen to music. My first wife and I started off well. We went to a dance and she look great in a beautiful red dress. The song 'Lady in Red' was playing, and it became our favorite song. A divorce and now her death has placed new meanings to the song. Even though she and I were separate, I still get misty when I hear that song.

Remember, that when a person writes music, they are trying to express feelings in their creation. If you like to strech out mentally, listen to Shostakovich's fifth symphony. Ok, you may not believe me, but try this.

Shut off the phone, No distractions, and crank the thing up. Do not let the music become background noise for anything else. Really listen to it. I cried at the third movement and was shouting and screaming at the fourth. I know I am crazy.

The music I love makes me incredibly happy. Even music that a lot of people might consider depressing like Radiohead (I don't think they are at all depressing but a lot of people I know seem to think "it's the kind of music you would slit your wrists to". Muse and Radiohead are my favourite bands and I find it almost impossible to listen to any of their songs and feel sad. I find their music amazing and they are what inspire me to become a musician. However, although I don't get sad by music, sometimes I get really annoyed by, and find it almost unbearable to listen to, a song/artist that seem to posess no musical talent whatsoever. e.g the pigeon detectives (In my opinion lol)

Sorry for long winded and probably unhelpful answer.

Mostly happy on the whole, I think.

I especially love sad/love songs but they rarely inspire in me a "true" sadness, more of a bittersweet feeling, which is actually the kind of sadness you enjoy. The kind of sadness that is dreamy and beautiful, which is what I love about music anyway.

There is a wonderful book called "This is Your Brain on Music" by Daniel J. Levitin. It explains "the science of a human obsession." It includes the brain's reaction to music through the frontal lobe (which, if you don't already know, functions your emotions).

Happy, when you want to but if you want to be depressed then it can make you feel sad, like if a song reminds you of your pet squirrel, who was run over by a ford focus last Saturday, then some music can make you feel sad.

music always makes me happy, whether its classical, rock, classic rock, heavy metal, alternative, pop. well, maybe not pop.... but any other kinds of genres with male voices (female vocies always makes me so irritated... too high pitched for me)

music takes me father away than reading books. it takes me to another world, a sanctuary. a place where i could relax and sing and let go of my emotions. i could cry when i listen to music, i can smile, and i can sing or scream. music just releases my soul.

all day long i always hide my feelings. when i'm sad i dont show it, when i'm energetic i dont show it. when i feel like punching something i dont show it, when i feel like hugging people or being hugged i dont show it. music. it releases my soul. with music i am allowed to do anything. without music, i would have commited suicide way back. i dont think anyone could live without music. i just cant imagine a world without music

My music makes me happy and sad because I relate it to memories. If not the scale it is written in helps, major minor etc. And the words and tempo.

As the rhythm and beat of the music sends out certain brainwaves signals which are picked up by our subconscious mind and from there it manipulates our thoughts, actions and feelings.

it just annoys me. I guess it's all about how your brain works and what 'vibe' you are on. Visual stuff does it for me, an art gallery, and music just irritates the heck out of me as I just don't like noise of any sort. You just have to do what ever raises your vibe, different for different people I guess.

NORMALLY HIGH MOMENTUM SONG MAKE YOUR BLOOD CIRCULATES FASTER THUS IT MAKES U HAPPY?

MUSIC PERKS UP MY LIFE MOST OF THE TIME. MUSIC IS MY LIFE, I WOULD SAID.

MUSIC MAKES ME CONFIDENCE TOO.

Happy. I've never had any make me sad.
2009-02-07 07:51:43 UTC
A bit of both..

higher pitched notes, and fast beats make you happy

whereas low tone long tones tend to make you sad.
