We let ourselves be scared by watching scary movies because sometimes we just have the need to feel frightened; we like the adrenaline, the sudden jumps, when our hearts pump with fear and the overall feeling of being scared when we watch a horror movie. It's all natural, but some people enjoy that more than others.

We enjoy a bit of fear from time to time and there's nothing wrong with that. I think it's also because people tend to like the fact that they've made it through watching the whole horror movie. Our minds are structured in such a weird yet fascinating way, that we have different needs and sometimes our mind may want some dose of fear and we have to feed it.

Basically because we want to be entertained. WE know these movies are HIGHLY unlikely to happen in real life. We know that every movie, no matter how scary or realistic it is, has a technical crew, design crew, props crew, paid actors, etc. But still we let the plot of these movies scare us because that's our natural response to fear as humans. We can't help being scared by them. Some people are thrill seekers and enjoy watching disturbing horror movies, while others (like me) are a bit squeamish towards the horror and sci-fi genre and know that if they watch it, they'll be disturbed for weeks, even months. So they avoid those types of movies. If you know you're not a thrill seeker, do yourself a favor and avoid those types of movies because you won't sleep or concentrate at school or work with a disturbing horror film on your mind. (I speak from experience.)

- Biologically, Adrenaline is a good stimulant .

- Subconsciously, It's less terrifying than our lives: watching horror movies give us the sentiment to feel our self more safe and secured so we enjoy the fully the comfort, like when you fast you'll enjoy the meal.

Also sometimes we would like to renew with some sensations that we've learned from the very beginning of our life such: fear (Pica-boo), breastfeeding...etc.

- And as human been we are curious, we like to explore what's unknown and mystical. And we like going through challenges, and watching or living what may afraid us like seeing all scenes until the end; will allow us acquire certain victories no matter how little they could be, and such experience improves our self esteem.

As primates we were in a more dangerous world. Fear is the emotion that precipitates adrenaline. Which is needed for the "fight or flight" response. Now, in our domesticated, humdrum, safe world those emotions are mostly dormant. It's good to set them free sometimes. Especially in a simulated dangerous situation.

Horror movies don't scare me, never have, well Hellraiser did when I was like 4, but other than that nothing. Therefore I have to answer it like this, I watch them for storytelling, characters and practical visual effects and sometimes comedy if it's a comedic horror movie. Movies like Frailty, Dog Soldiers, John Carpenter's The Thing, David Cronenberg's The Fly, what have you, they're all really well done to great movies. So for me, it's the same reason I'd watch any other movie.

My guess is because we want to be scared without putting ourselves in real danger. Think of it this way. Fear makes our heart race, fills our blood with adrenaline, keeps us awake, gives us energy, and keeps us alert. When you think about it, all these things create a thrilling and pleasurable feeling and the effects are actually good for us because being more alert can serve as good personal security and having your body pumped with adrenaline or other hormones can have positive effects on the human body. However, the thing is people hate being scared normally because, normally, fear occurs when people's lives are in danger or at least assumed to be in danger. Thus, naturally, people avoid real-life fearful situations because they don't want to endanger their lives no matter the positive effects or feelings that fear might have. However, when you're in your own house watching a scary movie though, you get to feel all those thrilling effects on your body that fear can produce only at the expense of only watching scary fictional scenes, which can't endanger your life. I think this can explain why so many people tend to laugh after a scary scene scares them. They just love thrill and rush it gives them. I think that can explain why we enjoy scary movies so much. If this doesn't speak for everybody, it can definitely speak for me because this is why I enjoy them!

I think it is a really old reaction to predation.

Many animals are drawn to the spectacle of another member of their species being attacked. I have seen rabbits staring at a fox or stoat attacking another rabbit. Perhaps knowing the location of a predator is useful, or perhaps knowing what will attack and kill you is useful to survive.

Even now, as humans, having have no real predators, we are still drawn to stories or videos of attacks on our species. I think this must be a throwback to those times when predation by another species was a real possibility.

We tend to have an urge for fear knowing that we'll feel terror. We have a fascination for fright. There’s something about horror that speaks directly and instinctively to the human animal. Millions of years of evolutionary psychology have ingrained in our minds certain fear triggers – a survival instinct – Fear of the Dark where predatory animals might be laying in wait – Fear of animals with large sharp teeth who would make a quick meal of us. Fear of Poisonous Spiders who can kill with one bite. So ingrained into our developmental psychology. There are many reasons people watch horror and sometimes those motivations might change from day to day or from movie to movie. The complexity of the brain and variation in people’s tastes, don’t allow for a simple universal explanation. Movies are the ultimate artistic medium so far devised by mankind. It combines photography, motion, visual arts, acting, writing, and music – a sensory experience that engages us so completely that watching a movie is often compared to dreaming. Horror movies require us to face the unknown – to understand it and make it less scary. They allow us to see our fears and put them into context, to play what if, and in doing so, they shape our belief systems, how we see each other and ourselves. They are a safe place to explore and for some just a good bit of fun. The fact is we are just getting to understand how our brains work, but Scary stories – that is something that will never go away – in the words of Aurther Conan Doyle: “Where there is no imagination – there is no horror” – go out and make something terrifying

Adulthood and atheism ruined horror movies for me forever. The horror genre as we know it was mostly based upon the satanic panic of the 80's where things that go bump in the night are the result of satan, demonically possessed people, and malevolent spirits. The only horror movies that do anything for me now are more suspense type flicks that are somewhat plausible: (silence of the lambs, hostel, etc).

Often scary movies are terrible. I don't enjoy them at all. They lack imagination and sometimes they try and make up with the crappy storyline by having a lot of gore/blood/violence/cruelty. Usually they aren't even scary at all, just lame. There's only a few I've ever liked.

When I want to see a horror movie its usually for the same reason I want to see a fantasy themed movie. It's supposed to excite your sense of wonder and show you things that aren't real, like ghosts or supernatural things. Unless it's a slasher movie or a movie about a serial killer or something, and I'm not sure why you'd want to see those.

there are some feelings/emotions we have inside us that are never used and we want to make sure they are still there and we're on top of it for being humans. We rarely get goose bumps yet that's a good but strange feeling. We don't all get a chance to yell or scream (because it's inappropriate in most settings), and so we just want to let go of that emotion. And we like curling up in a loved one's arms and feeling vulnerable sometimes.

Sometimes we love to curl up on a sofa, turn the light off, and get ready to watch a very scary movie. BUT WHY?? When we know that at the end of the movie...we'll be terrified...

We need distractions from our own troubles, horrors and tragedies. For a short time, we can see someone in a terrible situation, and it's getting worse, and so on. We all have our own favorites, because for some of us, one is too boring, or too gross, or too much bad language even. Some prefer comedy with horror, and others like a sense of helplessness.

But it helps us forget our differences, and bond together in the hatred of some creature, or sympathy/gratification for the victim(s). Maybe we appreciate each other more after the end of the movie because of this bond. Hmm...maybe if we all watch a few...nah.

It seems from comments here on answers the we need to be scared, it’s good for us, watching scarcer movies gets our adrenalin moving. I am afraid I don’t like them, these horror films. The walking dead is an example of how far we are going down into a ghoulish fascination of blood and guts. Lots of torture, people being cut up and mutilated in every ghastly way. I don’t understand how intelligent people can watch such rubbish.

After a while you get immune to all this horror, so you have to go further down the pit.

Until you become one of the walking dead.

With no feelings, only pain and suffering makes you smile

It's a complex question, but in simple terms, we enjoy the feeling of being scared. A scary movie is an example of acceptable;e risk, which means we can get the phyco-chemical response while still in a safe setting.

I watch them but I don't get scared. There are no scary movies!

I'm sure it has something to do with knowing that it can't happen to you, or it's not happening to you, and that when it's over you can feel relieved and safe and secure.

But please, if anyone knows of a REAL scary movie, do let me know. I've seen them all, most of them make me laugh, they're so terrible.

Very few horrors got me scared. And it was probably because I was like 12-13 back then. I watch them because of the storyline. As crazy at it sounds,I would actualy want to experience some of them lol. Sadly my country is poor in haunted places and I don't have the money to travel around lol.

Maybe it's because we're bored, and need a change in emotion. I watched a scary movie tonight. I never watch them, but it's Halloween and I don't have other plans. I regret it now, because I feel sad and sick to my stomach. See what happens when you're bored?

Would you rather study music or just get a *******? 99% will choose the *******. My answer would be that its funny to know something is going to happen and when you scream you kinda laugh in the inside like wow I really got scared. Being scared is kind of like your mind thinking that somethings going to happen. You may find that your fingers get tingley and you will have bumps on your arms and legs aka goose bumps. If your like me you will laugh at these things because we all know most of the things we see are never going to happen. When was the last time you say a girl walk out of your own T.V. I mean come on we all love that little thrill we get when we jump/scream/maybe even cry.

Scary movies have a lot in common with scary roller-coasters. They allow people to become terrified in a controlled or "safe" environment. Terror causes people to feel larger-than-usual amount of adrenaline and, as respondent PlanC noted, that adrenaline provides high levels of stimulation (coupled with fear). However, adrenaline is not only a stimulant - it also can bring about euphoria. Our feelings of well-being following a large adrenaline rush is a lot like the thrill of victory felt by athletes in a highly contested competition or delivering a successful speech before a large audience. The subsidence of adrenaline - its fading away - is a very pleasing sensation. We get to feel a huge blast of emotional arousal without actually having to score a winning touchdown, and anyone can do it. Hence the nickname, cheap thrills.

1-Because people can be told by parents about things that are dangerous, so the son can be aware of it, when they face it, they will be scared Example: Someone will attempt to stab you with knife, of course you would flight or fight: that means you will do physical reaction without thinking what to do, even if you see person stabbed someone with knife in real life, you would run wouldn't ya?

2-Everyone is born with their natural, it is natural for people to get scared it's very important emotion in life, some people can't be scared when watching movies.

3-Because vision can alert your body and you will get scared, and your brain will change a little bit and your body will be alerted when you have that nervous.

The same reason we like roller coasters, sky diving, bungee jumping, and ghost stories around a camp fire: They scare the heck out of us, then when its over, we feel such release of tension that we actually relax more deeply after the fact. It's the same principal as release tension in your body they suggest tense your shoulders then release the tension. They are actually therapeutic in that we get our frustrations and stressors out when we get freaked out by something, then the problem/situation of real life doesn't seem quite as bad.

I don t really find scary movies scary. Only thing I find scary is Jeff the Killer whenever I search something on Google and it accidentally appears. But lately I ve not frozen when I ve seen him (as much as the first time anyway). I swear if one of my friends wanted to troll me and show me a picture of him, I would kick that friend hard.

I asked this exact same question today to myself. The reason is rooted in the human psyche. It's the same reason why people enjoy telling scary tales around a camp fire; we are curious beings that are interested in the unknown.

Usually I don`t view horror movies; -

recently, I watched with real look- way fear, ...near - terror, the movie (BTW- not `horror` genre,)

`What Dreams May Come`.

Perhaps it was due to the lead - actor`s phaving passed away,

or the Baudelaire - type settings

or the plot itself.

I kept going to see the film`s outcome...which is why we watch..to see the good guys not destroyed

or...otherwise...

modern versions of the harrowing fairy tales of childhood..seminal for life.

the same reason we drink alcohol, have unprotected sex, and make all sorts of other bad decisions: it has to do with the human condition.

most people start drinking alcohol either as a test to see what it's like, or to prove they are "manly" enough to handle it (or more capable than men, in the case of some women). plus it gives us sensations we've not felt before.

we have unprotected sex because "we're horny NOW!" and want to satisfy our desires on-demand, and so our logic becomes skewed. plus, our adrenaline level rises, and as that happens, blood starts pumping into...certain areas, making it *ahem* HARD for us to say no.

and most other bad decisions? those are made because we are stupid. well, undereducated, to be more accurate. we don't know enough about the situation, but our "I WANT IT NOW!" inside voice urges us to make a snap decision, and so we make poor, uneducated decisions.

human nature in all 3 cases.

in the case of scary movies, we try to prove we can handle it, and thus prove it to ourselves, and our peers.

Humans were made to confront fears. During prehistoric times we had to face off against wild scary animals that could also kill us. Confronting fear is a challenge for survival, where you test your physiological endurance. There is also a sense of adventure facing the unknown. and unexpected. Scary movies are like survival guides showing us what it is like to be in a worst case scenario, and almost all the time show us the protagonist fight for survival.

I think some people watch (or read) horror for the same reason some people ride rollercoasters, and do a ton of other stuff. And mind you, this is terror, but "at a safe distance". People know the slasher isn't going to jump through the tv screen and knife them to death any more than the Xenomorph is going to tackle them in the hallway and turn them into a human incubator. Let's face it, only a lunatic will knowingly walk into a cage, wrapped in sausages, and call a hungry lion over for lunch.

Why do we make horror movies?

1) Reality/Flesh is illusory 2) There is a spiritual mirror.

All words have etymology, and all stories are pertained.

OK Dracula is named after a certain historical figure, but the story lines are no way in resemblance to the activities of Vlad the impaler. (The story lines are always pertinent to sucking human beings dry)

Why do we visually depict and portray horror scenes on stage like Dutch painters did in the 16th century. EG: Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder?

Are we subconsciously or unconsciously trying to tell ourselves something – I say this because all the main religions tell us we're not even conscious at all.

---------------------------------------...

IE:- 1) Zombie movies: Ghandi, Jesus, 11 of the twelve apostles, Martin Luther, Malcolm X, John Lennon, Bob Marley etc. (The dead caught them)

Why do we make movies like "The six sense, and The others", are we trying to tell ourselves something?

Who are the dead?

Answer:- US !!!

(Collosions 3:3)

For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

ISLAM.

The Koran itself seems quite clear: "And you were dead, and He brought you back to life. And He shall cause you to die, and shall bring you back to life, and in the end shall gather you unto Himself." (2:28).

Buddhism

Avidyā (Sanskrit; Pāli: avijjā; Tibetan phonetic: ma rigpa) is commonly translated as "ignorance" or "delusion".

Hinduism

He who is forgetful of the Self, mistaking the physical body for it, and goes through innumerable births, is like one who wanders all over the world in a dream. Thus, realizing the Self would only be like waking up from the dreamwanderings.

Sri Ramana Maharshi (December 30, 1879 – April 14, 1950)

---------------------------------------...

IE:- 2) We make demon, vampire, werewolf and monster movies? - There are people in the world who's business is reliant upon human frailty (So these things are spiritually mirrored) -- Human frailty is the biggest prime market in the world of which the paradigm we know to be capitalism is inextricably linked with - (Escapism, and a propensity to be violent, desiring and promiscuous--> Hollywood----------And prime market slave trades >> Banks, politics, bureaucracy, law and associated organizational monogamy while some two tier demonic doctors and scientists constantly strive to conquer this condemnation keeping the elixir for themselves) – Professional parasites, Gambling casino bosses, sex trade pimps, drugs and arms dealers ect - Yes, demons, vampires, werewolves and monsters indeed !

The characters always resemble animals, while the story lines pertain to human activity.

Sorry, don't like suits too.

To add credibility to the movie's concept, keep the garage door open (if there is one) and other doors open or at least unlocked while viewing this film and of course sitting with your back towards the open door. Lower the brightness output of the TV and shut off all ambient lights. This should help the scare factor.

when you are scared (if there is a real threat) the chemical Dopamine is released into the brain (and a different one but lets not worry about that) which makes you run (Dopamine is also the chemical which makes you happy) so when you watch a horror movie the there is no real threat and you know this but your brain doesn't so the Dopamine is still released but not the one witch makes you run

Its a psychology thing.Humans enjoy the sensation of fear, as it is key to survival, or was before civilization, anyway. Also we feel the need to prove our fearlessness to our peers and the easiest modern way is to watch the latest horror movie. Not that horror movies are a good thing. After a while nothing shocks you anymore. Literally. A mother could torture her baby to death in front of you and you wouldn't flinch. But this doesn't stop it being OK to watch one or two occasionally. Everyone likes a good horror movie now and then.

We all like to get scared once in a while watching a good movie because it's fun. Its like saying why do people do bungee jumping when they know that they will probably scream well is the same concept. Instead of watching a comedy movie or a drama movie many of us prefer to watch horror movies because they are more entertaining especially the ones that keep you awake at night (i.e. The Conjuring, Anabelle etc...)

I think we let ourselves be scared by watching scary movies because we want to see how much we can stomach and our hearts can take. I have never made it through Halloween/2/3/4.... even. So I suppose that would make me "chicken". I don't watch scary movies anymore but have watched and attempted to watch a few with my daughter. She loves them despite my "what is that? and "oh my God's" when she is watching on TV. My little 6 year old granddaughter does not even know that much about them nor ever watches. At least, I don't think so. She is very much a fan of Hotel Transylvania. So I better keep on the lookout cause the "apple doesn't fall far from the tree". Praise the Lord.

Humans do good work under stress...and there is bad stresslike being overworked.going through a divorce..illness or the death of a loved one..and good stress or eustress that occurs when you first meet someone exciting and new, finding out you are expecting, a new car deal is accomplished.. where the mind is sharpened. endorphins which give pleasure are released...the stress or fright caused by a scary movie or thriller is that delicious stress..that makes us feel more alive...you will even catch some people laughing nervously...or the occasional psychopath laughing with delight.

It's a morbid fascination most of us have........

Look at the Ancient Romans, they liked to watch the Gladiators kill each other....looking back we think they were terrible people (which is true), but Horror and Gore was fascinating to them, nowadays we watch Horror movies for perhaps the same purpose (but we're more humane because it's not real).

The answer we are seeking is suspension of disbelief.

From an evolutionary standpoint, humans are biologically programmed, when investing our attention towards media such as radio, theater, television, movies, etc... To disregard all the rules of logic we take into account in our daily perceptive lives, and invest ourselves psychologically into that form of media, and enter a psychological phenomenon known as suspension of disbelief where we adapt to the rules or logic in the world a horror movie may culminate, and allow ourselves to believe this fictional world is real.

We will continue to believe this world portrayed in the horror film is real as long as the "rules" projected to us is consistent, and therefore the film makes sense in correspondence to the story is attempting to tell...

Elements applied to a story such as plot devices or setting structure create abstract "rules" to the story.

If a character ran into a chainsaw warehouse, it would be different if it only had one door, where the character would enter and never escape... Or if it had two doors, one where the character could enter and one the character could escape from.

These abstract conceptual rules are constants and variables in a story that when used right can create tension, or tight situations... When used poorly, could illustrate "easy" situations, or limply situations...

This is an example of applied "tension" in a situation" because all of the "rules" create synergy, and constraint...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWfK5JyD2bA

Walt needs money to save his family from getting killed, and Skyler gives all of his money to his boss to save Walt... This is a situation that couldn't easily be solved, and therefore creates tension...

This is an example of poorly illustrated situations, a situation that could be easily avoided...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk_bsgqhQTc

This scene is rather sad... Though the fact that he could have easily opened the door and closed it in time removes tension, and just makes the scene feel weak...

Anyway, on to my point, when a writer is consistent in the logic that a setting operates in correspondence to... It makes that world feel more believable, and therefore a horror movie is convincing enough to be scary.

I think it's a similar reason why people watch torture films. It's an endurance test. By the way, torture films mess with your brain a LOT more than horror films. Way more. As in, you can't eat for weeks, more. I suggest you watch a movie called "Salo: 120 days of Sodom." Then, after that, watch Cannibal Halocaust. Then watch "A Serbian Film."

You will be so traumatized when you are finished watching them. One you have watched those movies, you will have seen more rape scenes, murder scenes, ****-eating scenes, than you ever even cared to know about. Just watching it makes you feel like a bad person. You probably had no idea this genre even existed. That's why they are torture films - they are literally, mental torture. But people watch them, because they are an endurance test.

I think that people also do this because there is no other time where you can experience such a thing in a safe way. When you're watching a movie, you know it's going to come to an end, you know you're not going to get hurt, you know no one is going to get hurt. Horror films can give you a thrill of a dangerous situation without actually being in one, it's an adrenaline rush, that sort of thing.

I would say it's because, we as humans are very curious, and that curiosity leads us into positions where we unconsciously are always wanting to challenge ourselves. Most would consider watching a "scary movie" to be a challenge, therefore making us coax ourselves into watching one.

The same reasons we use rollercoasters, do bungee jumping, parachute jumping etc. The thrill and the adrenaline rush can be quite intoxicating for many people. A scary movie plays on our fears, some of which we never voice, but the confrontation with them and the fact that watching a movie is a safe activity gives us the adrenaline while there is no need to flee. All we are left with is the "high" of the adrenaline rush.

Also, some people watch scary movies as a way of confronting their own fears. We know we can switch off the movie, we know we're safe while watching them, so they are ways of approaching our fears without being in danger.
?
2014-11-01 06:24:37 UTC

Why do suburban house wives watch Law and Order SVU, a show about raping and killing children?

Why do post-college refuges working at Starbucks never shut up about economics and watch PBS shows about it?

Why do the uneducated love to tell you about science?

It's simple catharsis. Whatever your tension is, that's what you are drawn to as a way to release that tension. I like comedy about racism and honesty about life because they are things I don't get to express often. The housewives don't get to talk about how they fear their kids safety. And the average American doesn't know what to do with the antzyness around the safety that their parent's smothered them with, so they watch movies about getting killed.

On a personal note, when knife fights are of have been a part of everyday life, horror movies aren't that exiting. A movie that explores how the lawyer down the street worked really hard to have a dream life but now regrets it but has to battle between obligation and freedom to find his own heart in a post-suburbia world, teetering on the fence between his violent past and the skills he's learned to work as a professional; where there isn't a clear ending, that's a movie I might watch. That quarter-life/life battle is my tension.

I think our subconscious tells us to be afraid. In modern day it is practically the norm to be watching scary movies with the lights off. We all know we will be scared in the end but thats why we watch it. The adrenaline pumps around our body. This can cause a rush and send you into an almost trance state of mind where it if fun to watch scary movies in the dark.

Inside every human being there is a monster that must be fed; some need tons of calories, others less; but violence is in our DNA.

We are not only defined by who we are, but also, and perhaps more importantly, by the monster that we have avoided to become.

Generally speaking, scary movies don't do a thing for me.

Some people like to test their courage (in an otherwise peaceful society) by watching scary movies. I sincerely doubt that people in the war zones, who actually LIVE those scary realities, would crave the same empty thrills and baseless tests of courage.

Ah! Vsauce has a video consisting of this question. It is really helpful and i suggest you check it out.

The video is called, "Why are we morbidly curious?"

Link here -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbdMMI6ty0o

Michael from Vsauce has other helpful videos which include the explanation of fear.

Michael Explains that we are continually curious no matter what, and always want to test ourselves with creepy or eerie challenges. Humans feel 'stronger' facing their fears, and enjoy it while they can.

Later on, of course they end up being scared, with images or thoughts in their minds, causing physical and mental effects of slumber and positive thoughts. Michael Vsauce says facing our fears may cause us to feel braver and better about ourselves for that short while, and we enjoy that short feeling of being scared.

It causes our imagination to challenge itself with things we do not desire, in a stereotypical, dreamy manner. We all have that slight daredevil personality inside of us, and with that it comes with being scared.

To sum it up, us humans are Curious daily and want to test ourselves with not only things we love, but things we hate.

I really suggest you watch Michael Vsauce's video. It is extremely helpful.

Thank you

Simply put, we know the movie will never happen in real life, yet we still get scared. Why? Because once we see the movie, it looks so real the mind just can't help but think "but... what if this happened to me?" Then your imagination takes over and you start making all these situations in your mind of what might have happened if it was real. Then as your imagination gets restless, it combats your reasoning ability and the imagination starts to take over. After some time (depends on each person), nothing bad based on the movie happens so reason returns.

I don't get scared of horror movies.

I think people get into it because of the music. That's just my opinion. i've noticed the mood changes as soon as the music changes and the suspense builds up. I don't know however, why people

'can't sleep' after watching an alleged scary movie.

However, i do get scared from horror games since it's interactive and I'm controlling it. When i was like 6 i used to be reaaally scared of the game zelda. The creepy music that would blast up when im about to get attacked and the depressed tree scared me. I had a hard time sleeping because of the fear was huge.

But as for horror.

It goes like , first of all you would have to like a category and that would be horror.

Second of all:You would want to get that feeling of...intense , preasure , frightning , and simplely playing scary moment.

Peaple that like horror , would mostly want to feel that moment where your vunerable , you feel something in your chest ,its an adventure but yet scary , it gives you a feeling and that feeling is what makes you like horror , and from impulse or from what i just wrote this is why people let themselfs be scared

I believe that we like watching movies knowing that we will be scared because of the stimuli associated with watching the movie. Some people have higher optimal arousal levels and may seek to fulfil it even by negative stimuli such as fear. When watching these movies we may get a rush from the excitement or the fear itself. This is why I believe we like horror movies; for the same reason that people do risky activities.

Nothing is as scary as the real world, the fact that we're all going to either get sick and die, or die before our time due to a gruesome accident or violence. Movies that have alternate realities, such as ghosts, demons, and aliens only show a fictional world that is kinder than the real world, in which is short and brutal and death is forever.

Well first you have to understand Dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical the brain releases as a response to certain things. It give you the feeling you get when you are in love, or excited. The reason a lot of people love checking their feed is because it releases Dopamine. Different things trigger different amounts of Dopamine for different people. Such as checking feed, falling in love, or watch horror movies. I get low Dopamine release from social media, but very high release from horror movies. A lot of times it's not even your personality that determines if you like certain things, it's the Dopamine you get from them.

We let ourselves be scared by watching scary movies because it gives thrill. When we watch movies we get submerged in the fictional world of movie. It cause us to act like we are part of movie too. And like after every thrilling event, our brain release feel-good harmones to make us feel good and reduce stress. Ultimately, feel-good harmones and our natural defense mechanism are responsible for letting ourselves watch scary movies.
2014-11-01 09:24:15 UTC
We want to let ourselves to be scared because it gives a feeling that are not usually felt. It is proven that a little fear is good for you. It is also because we have gotten dull to our surroundings because there no threat whatsoever. Fear help us stay alive, to survive and we lack that feeling due to our new and modern economy and surrounding. That is why we let ourselves be scared to death by watching a scary movie.

New research from David Zald shows that people differ in their chemical response to thrilling situations. One of the main hormones released during scary and thrilling activities is dopamine, and it turns out some individuals may get more of a kick from this dopamine response than others do. Basically, some people’s brains lack what Zald describes as “brakes” on the dopamine release and re-uptake in the brain. This means some people are going to really enjoy thrilling, scary, and risky situations while others, not so much.

Lots of people also enjoy scary situations because it leaves them with a sense of confidence after it’s over. Think about the last time you made it through a scary movie, or through a haunted house. You might have thought, “yes! I did it! I made it all the way through!” So it can be a real self-esteem boost. But again, self-scaring isn't for everyone, and there are lots of psychological and personal reasons someone may not enjoy scary situations.

To really enjoy a scary situation, we have to know we’re in a safe environment. It’s all about triggering the amazing fight-or-flight response to experience the flood of adrenaline, endorphins, and dopamine, but in a completely safe space. These senses are directly tied to our fear response and activate the physical reaction, but our brain has time to process the fact that these are not “real” threats. Our brain is lightning-fast at processing threat.

Monsters are defying the general laws of nature in some way. They have either returned from the afterlife (ghosts, demons, spirits) or they are some kind of non-human or semi-human creature. This speaks to the fact that things that violate the laws of nature are terrifying. And really anything that doesn't make sense or causes us some sort of dissonance, whether it is cognitive or aesthetic, is going to be scary (axe-wielding animals, masked faces, contorted bodies).

This is why we let ourselves be scared by watching scary movies and visiting haunted house, thrill rides, etc...

We like them because they give us some sense of courage, a challenge, a strange and new feeling. Because life, ordinary, is so dull. Fear excites us more than anything else. Even sex can't give that give that excitement. Man is hungry for things thrilling!

Because in our relatively safe world.....no wild animals to fight for food......our instinct is to feel fear....keeps us sharp and watching scary movies is a safe way of doing it.

it is suspense you dont know what is going to happen , the music or the background sound make it scary thrust me a horror movie wont be scary if they dont have background song or sound it is mostly about the sound or the silence , also if you dont know what is going to happen it will be scary

Risk without the consequences, same reason people enjoy rollercoasters and amusement parks. Our lives lack excitement so it has gained entertainment value.

Curiosity. What lays beyond that I don't know about? Could I handle (name your terror) if it happened for real? What would I do if (name your terror) happened to me? Fear is a fundamental protective response in every normal human brain, and it drives us to prepare for threats when we are not aware we are doing it. And no matter what people say about horror movies not being "real", they portray absolutely real fears that we all have-AND real things that could happen to us. Dramatic methods/characters are used to make up for a real life experience being shrunk into a one-dimensional screen, but the story is always ultimately about a real event that COULD happen, namely: what if something/someone can or wants to hurt me or kill me or my loved ones...maybe in horrible ways? That is something that is part of the reality of life.

People get murdered and tortured every single day. Maybe not in your town or neighborhood (that you know of), but in every country its going on (sorry to burst your happy bubble, all you die-hard "positive" thinkers!). A deep part of us, unless we've been unusually sheltered, knows this, though the sheltered or "positive thinkers" would be the ones to say a phrase most of us will find familiar: "I never thought something like this could happen to me.".

So we are drawn to face our fears, to see if or how we could handle it. Horror movies also can make us feel that we are safe as we face the fear, because the horror is happening "out there" and the situations/characters-while extreme and dramatized for effect-let us face certain fears while encouraging us to think, "That couldn't happen to me." Horror movies create what is a false sense of having faced a fear because your cognitive mind says it couldn't happen, but your limbic brain hangs on to the images, leaving you with conflicting messages that make you want to see another horror movie! I don't believe they are really a healthy simulus to the brain. There are plenty of other ways to amuse ourselves that won't cause nightmares and jitters, and can actually be more constructive.

There is one group of disturbed people who watch horror movies from the other persepective: that of the perpetrator. Often people who love horror movies and watch them every chance they get are dealing with rage, violence or narcissistic issues. They rather enjoy seeing people getting hurt or killed; they like identifying with the all-powerful entity that is causing so much pain and destruction. Something to think about!
