it means, talking to someone as if they're lower than you. Like a mother talking to her children. Or a boss to his employee. What wouldn't be condescending is maybe friends just have a normal chat.

Basically condescending means to act uppity or being rather snobbish when answering others. Just watch your tone, or the way you talk to others. A good example would be not to boast or to act superior to that person like saying " I wanted to get a BMW but you know how SOME people would say I was showing off..." insert fake sounding laugh here. Or " I liked my history class but for some people it just seemed so hard, I mean really, it can't be that hard a subject?" You just sound like a know it all that way. Hope I helped! :)

Talking down to someone. Speaking as if you are more intelligent, superior or knowledgeable than the other person (even if you are) and making them aware of it by your tone or use of technical language. That is being condescending or patronizing. Explaining something to someone in simple or basic terms without making them embarrassed by their ignorance, would be the opposite of being condescending.

Talking to someone like you think they are idiots, or like you know sooo much more than they do, so don't do that.

DO, speak like you appreciate the other persons feelings, intelligence, opinions...even if you don't really, but that would make you look bad ad start a fight..and don't use accusatory phrases like "you always" or "you are just..." speak in the first person "I feel" "it's my opinion that"..don't swear, don't lose your cool, and don't act like a jerk to get your point across
