A social worker with a masters would be cheaper. You could then become a licensed clinical social worker and do just about as much as a PhD. Insurance reimbursement will depend on your state.

If I had to do it over again, I would pick a degree in social work just for practical reasons. My masters is in counseling psychology. I received in in Pennsylvania. At the time, I didn't find out until well into the program, that there was a law forbidding counselors to become licensed. However, social workers could get license do the exact same work as a counselor. They law has since changed since I graduated but I just wish I would have know all this before hand.

Definitely check out your states laws first.

Neither if you're looking for money! But the MSW will cost you less in educational funding, so you'll recap the investment more quickly.

An MSW costs less and allows you to do more. It also takes much less time to complete and doesn't box you into therapy. You can be an administrator if you'd like. That's what I do.

the psychology major with a doc. is he gets to make his/her own hours...the social worker with a master has to work for the gov. with gov. hours... the doc. gets to pick his clients and the social worker does not....
