Is there a phase that people go through when becoming a young adult? Like age 18 to 20. physical awkwardness, social awkwardness, identity trouble. Those type of things.

Well I'm 20, fun and attractive. Since I was 19 I've been dreading years going by and pressuring myself to go out, travel constantly, and have more fun because I feel like these are the last weeks of my young life. I stress myself out about wasting time. This is most likely a phase, negative thoughts and pressures of adulthood, and saying goodbye to my teenage years. Now that I have my degree though, I'm starting to appreciate the natural course of getting older. I still go out to party when it's the last thing I really feel like doing; afterwards I'm always glad I went though. The transition can be pretty depressing, but at least I'll still be a bad *** chick in my 20s, and who knows maybe our generation will mix it all up and it will be okay for me to wear pigtails, mini skirts and blast house music when I'm 35. That's the hope that's getting me by. lol

It may just be semantics but Young Adult usually refers to people who are 14 to 18. At 18 you are an adult. Increasingly parents and schools are not doing their job in preparing kids for adulthood. They are sheltered from the consequences of their own behaviors, protected from low self-esteem by not being held to high standards and challenging work. It isn't a phase, it is the sudden onslaught of the reality of being an adult who is unprepared for responsibility. The kind of awkwardness you describe should have been overcome in high school although you are hardly alone in these problems.
Part of the problem is the lack of real social interaction during adolescence. Too much time is spent on-line where people can be rude or indulge in inane conversations that are only semi-literate instead of face to face. I-pods allow people to ignore the world around them while self absorbed in music so that they do not learn the basic social graces of paying attention to others and making conversation.

Impatience to leave the nest. «Can't wait to get out of here!» feeling.
