Everyday thousands upon thousands of questions are asked here about practically everything. Do you think there has ever been someone who asked a dire question, waited for the answer desperately and then went forward with a decision based on a response from a total stranger?

Yes I do - it all depends on the question asked, how serious the person asking needed the assistance and the response given. To some people it might just be like "meh" and move on, some will look and give approval and others in rare cases may use that answer as a new basis for something in their life.

The answer to your question is depended on your definition of "dire".

What do you consider to be "dire"?

Often people ask questions derived from more than just spontaneous thought.

They can come from academic research, or tests.

In this case yes, I'm sure they take the answers given in to consideration before moving forward with a decision.

Because of the vast amount of questions, and broad topics contained with in this site. I'm sure there is a mix of reasoning. But the fact remains that, this site is a viable source of information. Whether or not the questioner takes the answers given seriously is dependent on the person asking the questions.

Sure but they are still responsible for their own behavior,

choice of help and also their actions.
