Sigmund Freud founded the concept of Psychoanalysis. It's a technique to help people understand and explore their mind. Psychoanalytic approach to therapy is one where unconscious thoughts and childhood experiences are highly emphasized.

Psychologists/psychiatrists do not try to solve the patient's problems, but helping them getting to the root of the problem.

Freudian psychoanalysis is a method of treatment based on the psycho-dynamic theories of Sigmund Freud. In classical psychoanalysis, the patient lies on a couch (to promote regression), with the analyst sitting out of sight. The patient is asked to free associate, which is to say whatever thoughts come into their head without censoring them. The analyst notes connections, patterns and themes, defenses, in what is said, and notes what is not talked about.but rarely comments or asks questions. It is interesting that in this country, analysis can go on for years (four times a week!), but Freud's own analyses generally took about three months. Some of his famous cases have been published: The Wolf Man, Little Hans, etc.

It is more common today for people to practice psycho-dynamically oriented therapy, in which the patient sits in a chair, basically facing the analyst, and the analyst is much more active in commenting and making connections. The patient is still pretty much free associating.

Freud believed that all human thought and action related in one way or another to that persons sexual beliefs, acts and fantasies.

Freud is good, but I've always been Jung at heart.
