Self indulgence is often referred to someone who is being greedy, or is selfish, and often seen as a bad thing. Some would say a self indulgent person think about themselves a lot, they over eat, they care only about themselves, they take too much of a good thing, such as loads of cream cakes. These are the sort of things a person describes is the meaning of self indulgence.

But sometimes self indulgence can be a good thing. Take for example a person worn out from weeks and weeks of hard work at their company during the day, and at night when they go home from work, are building a new house for themselves & family. After all this hard slog as you can imagine, you'd be both very mentally and physically tired out. So if one day you said '' Sod it, I am going to be self indulgent today'', it would mean that you were not going to do any work at all, you were going to give yourself some pleasure like taking a trip to a Health Farm, have a sauna, have a swim, a lovely masage, a good meal, a drink of wine and totally chill out by yourself. You would then say you'd had a lovely self indulgent day.

Hope that explains the meaning well - mind you I just realised my example was written as a woman - though no doubt they could, I can't say I have ever known any woman that has literally come home from work and then set about laying bricks. I just got carried away with typing the answer.

Overeating is a good example. It is doing things you like too much or a lot. Usually it is unheathy in some way. A guy drinking a 6-pack of beer in front of the TV is self-indulgence. Pardon the illustration, but a guy or a gal having sex several times in one night with different partners would be self-indulence. As you can no doubt tell, it usually involves pleasure of some sort.

It implies that a person is out of control and is psychologically and physically unhealthy.

Self indulgence is an inability to resist the gratification of whims and desires such as, I am going to self indulge on a piece of chocolate cake that someone brought to the office today. I know I shouldn't have it but I will justify my behavior because I have been really good on my diet.

I wouldn't call it a "trait" I would call it a choice, everyone at one point or another indulges in something for themselves that they could have done without.

Self- Indulgence --- lack of self-control in pursuing your own pleasure or satisfaction.

You have very poor lack of self control when you are sitting if front of a table of sweets. Your self-indulgence is in danger of taking over your cravings.

It would be bad for you only if the indulgence was a bad thing.

Only if it is overdone. We need to self indulge ourselves once in a while to keep our selves happy after we do so much for other people. (That is saying if you are a giving person) We have to take care of ourselves, too.

Examples are a spa treatment, pedicure, an outfit, shoes, etc.
