Why do people like to tell others that they can't do something or aren't the type of person to do something?

Question

For instance... I'm an artist (since I was a child) and I had this guy that I knew who, when I told him that art was my major because I liked to draw, he just laughed at me (like looking down on me) and said "you can't draw... you're not that good" (without even seeing anything that I had done).

Also... because I grew up poor people like to tell me that I'm stupid or that I can't be into certain things, like fashion (cause I guess if you grew up poor you can't be into fashion), or that I can't do certain jobs or want a certain career because of the way that I grew up.

So what makes people think they can tell others who can or can't do certain things in life?

because they probably cant do things that you can do so they dont want anyone ells doing it because they cant even though they want to so if they cant be happy then you cant be happy (in there mids)

As far as the guy that told you you can't draw, ignore him for his own ignorance. You know in your heart what you want to do and who you want to be, and if all the chips fall in place then you go for it. Many times we need to have a back up plan in case the first plan isn't feasible or takes longer, or the mountain gets too big to climb. I think some people are letting you know to just have a back up plan, to fall back upon to keep you financially independent while you seek your true desires. Consider their words in that mode, and let the rest roll off your shoulders. Work hard, make good choices,and opportunity will know when you are ready.

people like this have low self esteem

and say things like

oh, that will never work & so-and-so

already tried that...it didn't work.

You just go ahead and go to school to be that artist!!!

And never mide the nay sayer

JUST DO IT LOL and prove them them wrong.

Oh and dont bother getting anymore of them in your life...Hang out with the kids that want to be artists,social workers and teachers!!!

wow.....YOU CAN! DO anything you want poor has nutting to do with it im spanish a i speak english i wanted to learn another language snce i was young i was in the fith and my family told me no that that was stupid look at me now in high school andthey said i wouldnt and couldnt i didnt care and now im on my third year of italian with an 98 average i speak it and im going far with it so go for it people are just hating

well they can do that! but it's up to you to accept their judgment or not!

when you accept it you let them dictact your life!

so don't accept what others toss out!

they say stuff like that to boost their selfs or just to be mean or because they know some who they are found of who does the same thing and in their eyes no one can be better then their connection!

They just are prejudice you know. they can't do it themselves so they want to bring others down with them. I know it hate it when people say you can't do it, it only makes me want to show them up even more. Like from LOST, I like John Locke's attitude on saying to everyone, "DON'T TELL ME WHAT I CAN'T DO!" so just say that to people he do. There also might be some jealously in saying you can't do it.

everybody is going to do that through out your life..they're going to tell you that you aren't smart enough to do this or that and you can't do this or that. but the best thing to do is show them that you can...i'd rub it in their face when you become a famous artist one day or when your the next mona lisa

because people told them things like that....but who cares, if you can or think you can the way you know is by trying not by what people tell you anyway....but most people are ignorant anyway especially about things they dont know or understand...
